  Thallus 3–6 cm wide, sometimes more than 10 cm, foliose, membranous, rounded, lobate, adnate, smooth, rugulose in parts, matt or slightly glossy, without isidia, olive-green, rarely bluish green. Lobes to 3 cm wide, few, rounded, imbricate, sparsely lobulate; lobules rounded; margins entire, sometimes slightly undulate. Apothecia usually dense, to 1 mm wide, often immersed when young, becoming sessile with a constricted base, or widely adnate; disc flat to concave, white-pruinose, sometimes yellow-pruinose, pale dark red; thalline exciple thick or thin, entire, smooth to rugulose, persistent; proper exciple euthy­plecten­chymatous or eupara­plecten­chymatous. Asci 65–90 × 15–20 µm. Ascospores 40–65 × 6–8.5 µm, fusiform to broadly acicular, straight, sometimes curved with acute sometimes extended ends, 6–8 or rarely 10-celled, not constricted, or sometimes constricted at middle septum. Pycnidia numerous, to 270 µm wide, laminal; pycnidial gel hyaline, pale yellow or pale brown. Conidia 4–4.5 × 1–1.5 µm, straight, slightly swollen towards ends. Var. laeve: Thallus usually 3–6 cm wide, sometimes larger than 10 cm wide Upper surface rugulose in parts, matt or slightly glossy. Apothecia with a euthyplectenchymatous or partly eupara­plecten­chymatous build up of small thin-walled cells to 10.5 µm diam., thin, proper exciple (central part to 20 µm thick, marginal part thicker), hyaline.
     
  Occurs in temperate South America, Australia (N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.) and New Zealand.
